NABRE

John 15

26“When the Advocate comes whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of truth that proceeds from the Father, he will testify to me. 27And you also testify, because you have been with me from the beginning.

John 16

12“I have much more to tell you, but you cannot bear it now. 13 But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth. He will not speak on his own, but he will speak what he hears, and will declare to you the things that are coming. 14He will glorify me, because he will take from what is mine and declare it to you. 15Everything that the Father has is mine; for this reason I told you that he will take from what is mine and declare it to you.

Pentecost commemorates the Holy Spirit’s arrival in the Church and the world, signifying God’s salvation for humanity through reconciliation and restoration of a right relationship with God.

The first reading describes the Holy Spirit entering the assembly of Jesus’ apostles in one room, accompanied by a mighty wind and tongues of fire resting on each person’s head. As a result, the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak foreign languages.

The Tower of Babel story in Gen. 11:1-9 shows humankind’s failed attempt to reach the heavens and become like gods by building a tower. God divided their language and scattered them, making it impossible for them to understand each other and work together. By contrast, the Pentecost event reversed the impact of the sin of pride, by restoring unity through the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on Christ’s disciples. People from diverse backgrounds gathered in Jerusalem, understanding the Galilean apostles as they spoke in their own languages. Peter proclaimed Jesus’ salvation, leading to the conversion of three thousand people. The Holy Spirit brought about peace and unity.

We have, in The Gospel today, Jesus’s promise of the Holy Spirit. He conveyed to his disciples that a time would come when the Advocate, sent by Him from the Father, would arrive. This Advocate, known as the Spirit of truth, would bear witness to Him. He informed His disciples that they too would serve as witnesses, given their longstanding companionship with Him since the beginning of His ministry.

Jesus spoke of having many more teachings to share but recognized that it was too much for them. However, He promised that when the Spirit of Truth arrives, It will guide people to the complete truth. This Spirit will not speak on its own but will communicate what It has learned and will reveal things to come. Jesus declared that the Holy Spirit would glorify Him by conveying teachings that originate from Himself. He emphasized that everything belonging to the Father also belongs to Him, indicating that the Holy Spirit’s guidance would be based on His teachings and authority.

Indeed, Jesus entrusted His disciples with the power of the Holy Spirit, a divine force that imbued them with the courage and strength to carry on His mission. With this spiritual empowerment, the disciples fearlessly engaged in the mission of saving souls.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord, let us embrace the Holy Spirit’s presence, which enables us to collaborate harmoniously despite our diverse personalities, perspectives, and approaches. The Holy Spirit unites each family in love and mutual respect. As children of God, empowered by the Holy Spirit, we confidently address God as “Abba, Father!”

With thanksgiving in our hearts, we will serve the Lord.
