OUR IDENTITY

THE PARISH THEME
“As for me and my house we will serve the Lord” – Joshua 24.15

When the Church reopened a week later after COVID-19 Movement Control Order (MCO) was “lifted”, the Parish decided to recommit and rededicate to serve the Lord with greater faithfulness. With this in mind, the quotation from Joshua 24:15 “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” was adopted as the Parish theme.

Joshua is one of Israel’s most faithful leaders, calling the people to make a choice between serving other gods, or serving the one, true God. Then Joshua sets the example with this declaration: “But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.”

The people of Israel in Joshua’s day were serving God half-heartedly. In reality, this means they were serving other gods. In choosing the one true God means giving our total, wholehearted commitment to him alone. Joshua not only had influenced his own household but also motivated many others to serve the Lord. For bad or good, our influence always extends beyond our immediate surroundings. True worship of the living God requires us to be sincere, not just with our words but also with our deeds. Our words and actions must always be in conformity to the will of God. True worship of the living God requires sincerity of heart. Hence Joshua requires the people to make the ultimate choice, a choice to serve the Lord willingly. It cannot be forced on us by rules and commands but rather rooted in genuine love. Every Christian from the moment we accept Christ, we are on a journey to reach the Kingdom of God. And like any journey we take, we have to figure out how to get there and avoid the pitfalls along the way.

The Map of Labuan (green color)

Indicate the Parish location. Green denotes the sign of life, a potential for growth in this parish. Green is also the Church liturgical color for ordinary time, a time for Hope, in anticipation for the coming of our Lord.

The Chalice (gold color)

The chalice (from the Latin word calyx, or cup) is the cup into which wine and a little water are mixed. At the consecration of the Mass, the wine becomes the Precious Blood of Jesus, in which Christ is truly present. The chalice is usually beautifully designed, and must be at least lined with precious metal such as Gold as a sign of respect.

The Anchor (silver color)

The anchor is often used to symbolize stability. Rooted in the Word, the anchor represents the hope and steadfastness we placed in Christ, for the salvation of our souls. It is colored silver as silver like gold is one of the precious metals mentioned frequently in the Bible.

Host (white color)

The white colored host signifies simplicity and purity of heart and holiness which we are all called to strive for.

Host with the letters IHS

A host is a Communion wafer, a round piece of unleavened bread used for consecration and distribution at Mass. The term comes from the Latin word hostia, a sacrificial lamb. Jesus is “the lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world” (Jn 1:29, 36) and His Body, offered on the altar of the Cross, is given to us from the altar of the Mass.

IHS

These letters are the shortened form of the Greek spelling of Jesus (Ἰησοῦς).

Parish Hymn:

WE WILL SERVE THE LORD

Lyrics: Jocelyn Yeo
Music: Michelle Lim
Arrangement: Gabriel Ong

Chorus:

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord
Yes, as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord
We will serve the Lord

Lord, how great you are
Beautiful beyond compare
Your love and mercy, O Lord
Reaches to the ends of the earth

We come to you O Lord
With great joy and reverence
Your Truth has set us free
And your goodness brings us great joy

Jesus, my Lord and my God
We praise you, we adore you
We glorify you
We will serve you, Savior of our souls
