NABRE

Mark 3

20 He came home. Again [the] crowd gathered, making it impossible for them even to eat. 21When his relatives heard of this they set out to seize him, for they said, “He is out of his mind.” 22The scribes who had come from Jerusalem said, “He is possessed by Beelzebul,” and “By the prince of demons he drives out demons.”23Summoning them, he began to speak to them in parables, “How can Satan drive out Satan? 24If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand. 25And if a house is divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand. 26And if Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand; that is the end of him. 27But no one can enter a strong man’s house to plunder his property unless he first ties up the strong man. Then he can plunder his house. 28Amen, I say to you, all sins and all blasphemies that people utter will be forgiven them. 29But whoever blasphemes against the holy Spirit will never have forgiveness, but is guilty of an everlasting sin.” 30For they had said, “He has an unclean spirit.”31 His mother and his brothers arrived. Standing outside they sent word to him and called him. 32A crowd seated around him told him, “Your mother and your brothers [and your sisters] are outside asking for you.” 33But he said to them in reply, “Who are my mother and [my] brothers?” 34And looking around at those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. 35[For] whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”

The family serves as the foundation of every community, a design originating from the very beginning of creation. The story in the first reading keeps God’s design in view. It narrates God’s dealing with the disobedient man. The couple, Adam and Eve, inevitably faced the consequences of their actions: the man had to work hard for a living, and the woman endured labor pains during childbirth. But in God’s mercy, He promised a Saviour to come from a woman. Jesus Christ was the promised Saviour. The woman was, of course, His mother, Mary.

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus’s interactions with His immediate family and His response to the scribes’ claim about Him being associated with Beelzebul reflect His role as the redeemer. Jesus’ mother, brothers, and sisters came looking for Him, likely because His relatives could not take charge of Him. When told of His parent’s visit, Jesus pointed to a new family He was forming based on “doing the will of God”. Jesus’ family was concerned that He was neglecting Himself to care for others, and when the scribes accused Him of casting out devils through Beelzebul, they became even more worried. In response, Jesus announced that anyone who does the will of God is His true family.

Indeed, Jesus’s obedience to God’s will stands up against hostility from the religious authorities. They accused Jesus of performing exorcisms through the power of Beelzebul, but actually, the Lord’s works of exorcism had only one purpose: to liberate possessed people from Satan’s hold. Battling with the power of darkness, the new family is formed on the foundation of obedience to God’s will. And so, St. Paul, in the second reading, calls us to strive for an everlasting home in heaven, for pain is temporary, but the glory is forever, yes, aiming not just for a day but for eternity. These earnest exertions certainly necessitate education programs.

Brothers and sisters in the Lord, with that in mind, in conjunction with Teacher’s Day, I would like to encourage all Catholic Teachers in Labuan to have a stronger sense of community and collaboration with the leaders of our parish. Let us pray for them so that they may carry out their teaching profession as the vocation to holiness.

With Thanksgiving in our hearts, we will serve the Lord.
