Matthew 28

16 The eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had ordered them. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped, but they doubted. 18 Then Jesus approached and said to them, “All power in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.”

In today’s Gospel, Jesus revealed the Holy Trinity when He said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go, therefore, make disciples of all the nations; baptise them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teach them to observe all the commands I gave you.”

In this great commissioning, the Trinity: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit – one God in three persons is made known.

The concept of the Holy Trinity, with three persons in one God, signifies the very essence of God as Love. The risen Jesus declared, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” Indeed, out of love and in obedience to the Father’s will, the Lord gave His entire life to redeem us. With this in mind, we can firmly place our trust and hope in His authoritative benevolence—His goodness is synonymous with His power!

In His redemptive love, He empowered the disciples to spread the Good News and make disciples of all nations through baptism in the name of the Trinity. The Catechism of the Catholic Church asserts that God reveals Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and the Incarnation of God’s Son reveals the eternal Father and the consubstantiality of the Son with the Father. The Holy Trinity is relational.

The official teaching of the Church can be tough to understand, but the Good News is that Jesus promised to accompany His disciples by saying, “And know that I am with you always; yes, to the end of time.” According to the CCC, the Holy Spirit is sent by the Father in the name of the Son and is inseparable from them. Each person of the Trinity has a unique role in the divine missions of the Son’s Incarnation and the gift of the Holy Spirit. So our understanding of the mystery of the Holy Trinity goes along with the missionary spirit.

We accept the doctrine of the Holy Trinity because it comes from Christ Jesus, who has sent us the Holy Spirit. As St. Paul said, “Everyone moved by the Spirit is a son of God. The Spirit you received is not the spirit of slaves bringing fear into your lives again; it is the spirit of sons, and it makes us cry out, ‘Abba, Father!’ The Spirit himself and our spirit bear united witness that we are children of God. And if we are children, we are heirs as well: heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, sharing his sufferings so as to share his glory.”

Brothers and sisters, as our Parish Day approaches next week, we fervently pray that this Trinity Sunday will inspire unwavering dedication to the mission of saving souls.

With thanksgiving in our hearts, we will serve the Lord.
